Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a very common form of arthritis. It is called an inflammatory arthritis because in this condition the lining of the joint, the synovium, becomes swollen and inflamed and starts to destroy the cartilage. It is a disease that has been around for thousands of years and yet there is still no precise cause found. If left untreated it can lead to serious deformities and disability. Fortunately over the last 50 years the treatment has become extremely good in preventing these things from happening. The advent of “biological agents”, antibodies that target specific parts of the inflammatory pathway has revolutionized care.
