Systemic Lupus Erythematosis
Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (SLE) is a disease of autoimmunity. That is in this disease the body’s immune system seems not to recognize its own tissues and starts an immune reaction against them. This leads to inflammation in the skin, mouth ulcers, hair loss, pleurisy and sometimes-serious kidney and brain inflammation. Fortunately however the disease is most often mild and just causes aches and pains and mouth ulcers, with or without rash. Treatment is often quite simple in the majority of cases and usually gives excellent results but when there is severe renal and brain involvement can be challenging. The disease is much more common in women and tends to resolve at the menopause.
